Adding and managing categories

Why categories?
Categories allow you to organise and arrange your content in an orderly and logical way. So, a good understanding of how to use categories is important for giving your users a good experience when browsing your site.

From the dashboard go to Posts > Categories

To create your new category first enter a Name - this should be formatted just as you’d like it to appear to visitors to the site.

Next, enter a Slug - whilst it sounds unusual, you don’t need to worry about it too much - the slug is used within the site navigation and to create links to your content. You will need to follow the rules stated though, creating the slug using only lowercase letters and adding a hyphen between words.

Within the ARPCE site there are two parent categories - News and Events. You will note that these reflect the two blog pages of the site and, as you might expect, any post you create in the News category will appear on the News page, whilst any post you create in the Events category will appear on the Events page.

You should select a Parent category for your new category. This ensures that any posts you subsequently place in the category will appear on the relevant blog page. In this instance we’re creating the ‘Seminars’ category as a child of the ‘Events’ category.

Now simply hit Add New Category to save your changes.

You will see the newly created category listed in panel on the right - note the hyphen and indentation which indicates it is a child of the ‘Events’ parent category.

Now, when you create or edit a post, you will be able to place it in your new category by using the appropriate checkbox in the Categories panel.

Making changes to a category
To delete or edit a category simply hover over it in the listing panel and the following options will become visible.

Hit Delete if you wish to remove the category, or Quick edit if want to make changes.

Make your changes as necessary and then hit Update Category to save them.
